MDF building - 4Ground Normandy semi-detached

Yes, I forget the chimneys when I took
the photos.
Since the big box of assorted Normandy buildings was handy, I grabbed a 4Ground semi- and had a go.

This was actually the first 4Ground kit I've done apart from a Dark Ages hut, so...

Ok... pops out of the sprues slightly easier than the Dave's Wargames kit did, although a couple of tabs did very slightly de-laminate their top/painted layer. Goes together very nicely - do need elastic bands to hold it while it dries and there's a bit of a moment where three hands or very quick-drying wood glue (I went for the latter) would help get things held in place.

They go for option 2 of the three to accent window frames, namely a dual layer MDF box, unlike Sarissa's option 1 (greyboard) or Dave's option 3 (just laser it on). If you're being picky, the dual layer approach in 2mm MDF does mean your window recesses are 8" deep, which is possibly a bit overscale.

The box is held together with a few small tab and slot locators, so unlike both Sarissa and Dave's it doesn't end up with a slight border on the base. The chimneys (when I remembered to fit them) are the same neat three layer sandwich that Dave uses (and I suspect where he got it from :D), and they were probably the hardest thing to get free of the carrier MDF. Again marks for floors that will fit a FoW medium base.

Two real gripes - to each their own, but I don't like 4Ground's paint jobs, so these will be getting a repaint. Yes, they're a good way of avoiding having to paint them if you don't want to, but a table full of them just look so obviously... well... 4Ground-y :D The other one?  the dormer roof section is very thin at the apex of each window. and I broke one in one place and bent it in another. Fortunately, there's enough space under the roof to fit a thin strip of spare MDF to line the bits up against to hold while it all dries.

All in all - decent kit. 4Ground come by their reputation honestly.

  1. R Ground no longer exist so enjoy the kits while you can. Personally I do not like them. Too complicated and the 28mm ones are not really gaming pieces.

    1. No, they just changed website and name in a bit of financial jiggery-pokery. https://4groundpublishing.co.uk/
