An archaeology question

My assignment for my course this week is quite an interesting one, and I thought I'd share:
Sit back and think of what [tomb, memorial or] battlefield you hope someday to visit. This can be from any time period and from any part of the world. Explain your choice.
I've already made my choice, which I'll explain in a later post.

Which would YOU pick?

  1. El Alamein. My grandfather fought there, (and must have enjoyed it so much he took my wee granny there for a holiday in the 1960s!)

  4. I've a few...Little Big Horn (ever since I got the Hamlyn book of "The Old West" when I was 6 years old), Balaklava (since reading Flashman at the Charge") and Verdun (simply because I've never been and its a remarkable battle).

  5. I would really want to go to Normandy, visit the beaches and all the famous inland places.

But something that would be very interesting to explore would be Hitler's bunker in Berlin.

  6. That's a tough question! To be honest I think I've been to just about every battlefield I'd like to visit (Normandy, various Western Front sites, etc). However, I would like to re-visit some Roman sites, particularly Hadrian's Wall. Maybe do some long walks following the wall itself.

  7. Gettysburg and Antietam are two I'd really like to see. But if I had the time and money I'd visit Thermopylae, Normandy Beach, Culloden,...I'd toss in Florence, Naples, and Veinice for the Italian Wars, but I'm more into the small skirmishes and murders so a week of photography in Italy should give enough reference and impression for terrain building!

  8. I went to the battle site of Waterloo last year, and the whole thing made vastly more sense to me when I could see the gradients and cover involved. (A shame about that great mound, though.)

I'd like to see some of the American sites, particularly Gettysburg and Cemetery Ridge.
