Beach part 11 and some scenery repairs

We're bringing our 54mm Hundred Years War game to Campaign:MK - it's essentially a scenario from Don Featherstone's "Skirmish Wargaming" brought very slightly up to date with chit-based activation. It does, however, use several of the Bloody Omaha modular hils, my 'big hill' and a blue foam piece of castle, all of which need some TLC.

Andy trimming the base of the big hill,
and hopefully not his fingers,
The big hill is mostly suffering from having been knocked around a lot, and also now needs flocking to match everything else (as do the Omaha boards!). The former's been rebased on a piece of thick A0 art board, and I'll touch it up and re-grass it later.

I did get most of the way through re-grassing (again!) the three Omaha boards I need, with layers of WWS static grass. They do look a bit good, I think.

I am resigned to re-doing the lot - the WWS approach just looks so much better! I will produce a detailed how to on it later.
I did also get round (finally) to grassing the bay board from the beach set to match. Essentially its WWS Spring 2mm,. then Autumn and Wild Meadow 4mms, then a bit of scuffing up, more 2mm Spring and then 6mm Dead Grass. And lots of layering spray.
The castle Andy got to work on - mostly involved replacing one wall section that had been accidentally sprayed with spray paint and melted, and touching up the bits where the blue foam showed through. I'll be drybrushing and texturing it later. And for a final step, we re-sprayed one of the Timpo (I think PVC) tents to see if we could find a solution to the paint flaking off. More later.

And that's the last of the 54mm shopping list...

Just nabbed on eBay....

It's the only Swoppet figure in the force (i.e. body and head are removable) but given the rarity of crossbowmen generally I didn't care that much.

I was for a few moments seriously tempted by this... but it's an example of what I mean about wince-inducing price tags... £77 plus postage (ok, it's only £6 a figure, but...)

But they're pretty... and I may start talking myself into them again...

Not buying the bombard, though - the basing's ugly, and it's thirty quid for something I could make with four cotton reels and a pack of balsa bits.

Preparing for the Royal Armouries Agincourt weekend....

Don Featherstone's original game.
As previously mentioned, I have been on a quest for various 54mm figures. These are for our club's game at Royal Armouries' (in Leeds) Agincourt weekend on the 23-24 April, where we will be putting on one of Don Featherstone's delightful little skirmish wargames from the book of the same name. As far as I can tell from the one photo in my digital copy of said book, his original game also used Britain's 1/32 (54mm) figures.

Bigger toys!
The quest has been pretty fruitful, although I continue to be surprised how wince-inducing the prices for some of the more recent out of production Britain's figures are - they used, for example, to do a box of 6 French crossbowmen, which have been discontinued for I think less than a decade. Someone on eBay wants £34.99 for THREE!!!

Anyway, I'm sorted bar one solitary crossbowman, which I hope to be able to track down in the next week or two, and possibly a bombard as I've just discovered Britain's do one. The last box, barring these, arrived today - actually these are new (unpainted) plastics from a Singapore company, but they're of a scale and largely of a style with the classic Britain's mouldings.

Hope to have these painted by Wednesday - they're already undercoated.

On a quest

So, for the club's latest mad scheme....

I'm looking for 54mm mediaeval (Agincourt-ish) toy soldiers (Britains, DSG, Deetail, Timpo, Airfix, Italieri) - preferably painted,, as follows:

18 English archers
5 men at arms with pole weapon of some sort
6 crossbowmen (this might be the tricky one)
6 assorted gun crew (hand weapons, empty hands etc)

Anyone got anything they want to get rid of? money waiting, but preferably not at the wince-inducing prices some of them go for on eBay :D :D
