Managed to clear most of the floor in the workshop off onto either shelving or the other room (which is looking even more of a tip, but half of the stuff in isn't ours. we just have a Big Storage Room...)

Got the terrain tiles and the big hill painted - this is cheap 'Warm Tan' emulsion from our local discount shop.

100K Prize Draw day 1 - the winners

Back from a trip to Bomber County (that's Lincolnshire) for the weekend. Didn't do East Kirkby, but did get buzzed by their Dakota at about 1000 feet while on the roof of Tattershall Castle, which was pretty awesome. The window displays also reminded me of stuff I need to do in the next heraldry post!

Got back and managed to do a bit more work on scenery - specifically, started on some terrain tiles. Ran out of foam glue, so that's it for now :D

Terrain part 7 - more on the big hill

As you may recall, we left the big hill as a skeletal structure in blue craft foam and foam board. Having managed to clear myself a space to work in, it was time (having run out of space in both the rubbish and recycling bins) to stop clearing up and continue on with the hill.

Here's the step by step:

First up, start with scrunched up balls of newspaper between the ribs, to give the hill a bit of support. These are loosely held in place with masking tape.

The stack of hard drives is to weigh down the slightly warped bit of foamboard while the glue on another rib sets to pull out the warp.

And here we are finished - a hill carcass ready for an outer skin.

The outer skin is Woodland Scenics plaster bandage, courtesy of the local excellent model railway shop, Trains4U (they do mail order). It is dusty as all heck, so what I do is open the package containing the roll and put it in a plastic bag. I then work with my hands inside the bag, ripping off strips one at a time around 3" wide (that's the bit that makes all the dust!), and dunking them in an ice-cream tub of water.

Get each strip good and wet, and lay them, overlapping, across the carcass of ribs, craft foam, masking tape and screwed up newspaper.

 Leave to dry for a day or two. I'm in Cleethorpes. They're drying and have been since Thursday.

Tidying the workshop

Tim the builder finally made it this past week: result? I now have

• a bunch of 600mm square bits of hardboard, which means that the terrain projects can move on
• more importantly, the small room off my workshop now has damp-proof. insulated walls, a proper laminate floor and.... several feet of SHELVES!!!

Which means I now have managed to clear a 2'x3' flat area on one of my two work tables, which means work on several projects can continue.

The last one! I'm away for the weekend (hoping to squeeze in a visit to East Kirkby), so I won't be starting the draws until Monday, so you have until 0800 BST (UK local time) on Monday to enter draw 1, and ditto on Tuesday through Friday for draws 2 - 5. Meanwhile, my robot will keep you amused with posts over the weekend!
